The focus of this print is a tall stone lantern within the precincts of the Hachiman Shinto shrine, which is located near Hakata bay in Chikuzen province. The kami Hachiman was regarded as the God of war and was identified with the legendary emperor Ōjin. Hachiman was also honored as the tutelary deity of the Minamoto family, who dedicated numerous shrines to him. - Hotei Vol. 1; pg. 67
A delightful pre-earthquake design.
