NOTES:
Fresh to market. Recently discovered from a local family estate in Sacramento, CA. Provenance: Originally in the private collection of an executive at Transamerica Corporation. Top executives were each gifted an Obata painting for that specific year. Signed and sealed by the artist. Presented in the original silk matte created by the artist. An important large original work, that is rarely offered for sale. In the 1950s, Obata would release a set of surimono size prints, taking inspiration from his earlier 1930 era paintings. This original work, commissioned by the Transamerica Corporation displays similar qualities to the completed woodblock print, "Deer in a Japanese Garden" from the Garden Series. For his important paintings on silk, Chiura Obata used pigmentation ground from natural gemstones. The undiminished richness of the colors presented by this painting is ample testament to the resulting quality of his efforts.
