Hasui, Kawase (1883 – 1957), “Moonlight over Lake Kamo, Sado (Pre-Earthquake)”

Notes: A scarce, pre-earthquake design. Hotei notes: "Sado is the largest island in the Sea of Japan, positioned twenty-two kilometres from the mainland Niigata Prefecture. The island was established as a provincial capital in the 8th century. Today - and perhaps even in Hasui's day - it is celebrated for its coastal scenery. Narazaki observes that, "Hasui produced a number of views of Sado at the same time, as he was unable to visit the island often. This print is an 'aizuri-e' (blue-printed picture). A few lights flicker in this deserted lakeside view; the mood can be likened to the feeling created by a lonely landscape, the cry of a solitary bird as it disappears to the left."
