Hasui, Kawase (1883 – 1957), “Onshi Park, Shiba”

Notes: One of the artist's most admired evening scenes from the 1930's. Delicate mica is used throughout the design to depict a rain shower. Narazaki writes: 'An ancient pine tree at the side of a pond: it conveys the brooding mood of a bleak nocturnal downpour. This work was undoubtedly created to rival the print, 'Karasaki no yau' (Night rain at Karasaki), from the series Eight Views of Omi, by Utagawa Hiroshige. - Hotei Vol. 1; pg. 112
