NOTES:
Notes: Jacoulet asked a friend, only half-joking, "If I drew two hundred hairs in an eyebrow, could Yamagishi carve them?" In fact, he could and did! Three impressions were used to create the shading of the salmon-colored background. Miles states that this, "spectacular print, takes the "Big Face" series to a new dimension." Part of the Flower Series, this is the only design completed of a subject from Fiji in the South Seas subjects. The South Seas prints were all created from sketches and paintings done between 1929 and 1936. As late as 1959, these early works were being carved to produce new prints. Since many were lost because of World War II bombing of Tokyo, several of them are among the rarest and most desirable of all the artist's oeuvre. - Miles, pg. 128
