Yoshida, Toshi (1911 – 1995), “Mt. Fuji from Ohito, Day”

Notes: Pencil signed and titled by the artist. "Two separate series of Mt. Fuji prints based on time-of-day were created in 1962. The first series, Mt. Fuji from Nagaoka - Morning, Afternoon and Evening and then a second series, Mt. Fuji from Ohito was printed with a sunrise and full daylight version. Sets of time-of-day prints like these had been a favorite concept for Toshi's father. The idea in Toshi's hands, however, shows the difference between father and son. Toshi's choice of strong, bold colors is apparent. The sacred mountain is prominent as background, but it is made to share both space and the viewer's attention with a bold middle ground featuring lively shades of yellow, gold tones, orange, blue, brown, plus dark blues for early morning. In the pair of prints from the Mt. Fuji from Ohito series, the sunrise print has dark, sedate blue as its dominant color in the middle ground. In the companion print, the same middle ground is in brightly illuminated yellow and gold tones. The prints assert that the land from which Fuji rises is vibrant. Through these designs, Toshi continued to use his father's favorite subjects, but treated them in an entirely different light." - Nature, Art, and Peace; pg. 58 Provenance: From a private collection. For the past 30 years the prints were properly stored away; never being framed or displayed. The majority of the collection showcases rarely seen MINT colors; several far exceeding numerous examples seen in prior collections.
