Binnie, Paul (b. 1967)

Born in Scotland in 1967, Paul attended Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, receiving his MA (Fine Art) in 1990. He then lived in Paris where he worked mostly in watercolors, painting figure subjects and occasional landscapes.

He began collecting Japanese woodblock prints in the late 1980's during a summer trip to Paris. This interest, and a desire to understand the methods of their production, prompted him to move to Tokyo in 1993. There he worked with Seki Kenji, who had been the chief printer at Doi-Hangaten. Paul developed his own block printing style, based on  traditional techniques.

Binnie moved to London in late 1998, after almost six years in Japan, where he continues to produce prints as well as painting in a variety of media. He now travels to Japan regularly and exhibits his prints and paintings worldwide. He participates in the annual CWAJ exhibition in Tokyo, and produces several new editions of woodblock prints each year.
