Notes: The 1928 edition, with the artist adding mica highlights throughout the background. To complete this variation of the original 1920 design, Miller carved a new background block and covered it with mica prior to the printing process.
When Miller began to make art again in 1927, she did so with a burst of energy, making several dozen prints to sell on her 1929-30 Tour of America. She created alternate versions for several of these compositions, recoloring some blocks to produce color variations.
This design adapts the right-panel of the original ink on paper painting titled, "Snow on Bamboo" (Brown, Fig. 9) into a more successful composition. Despite Miller's presentation of the print with the line "The spirit of the artist lives in the tip of the brush," her brilliance lay not in the brushed pictures but in the translation of her designs into the printed images.
Provenance: Acquired directly from a descendant of the L.M. Miller family. This was accompanied with the entire family collection of remaining works; including original paintings, pencil sketches and one of a kind proofs.
