Reportedly founded in the late 6th century by the regent, Prince Shotoku, the temple is located in south-western Nara. The buildings include wooden structures dating to the late 7th and early 8th centuries, making them the oldest surviving examples of their type in Japan.
Purchased directly from Watanabe by an American collector shortly after publication.
