Narazaki writes: 'The Ginkaku temple seen from the landscape garden, which is composed of interesting configurations of bizarrely shaped rocks. The landscape garden, the Ginshada, would be located to the right. The tasteful Higashiyamaden - the embodiment of the refined arts of the shogun Yoshimasa in its aesthetic canon of wabi-sabi - is visited in full winter'.

The Ginkaku temple was built as a retirement villa in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto in 1482 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1426-90). It subsequently became a centre of Kyoto's elegant 'Higashiyama culture'. Following Yoshimasa's death in 1490 it was converted into a Zen temple dedicated to his memory. - Hotei Vol. 1
