Founded in 874 by the priest Shobo (832-909), the Daigo Denpo temple is one of the principal temples of the Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism. Divided into upper and lower precincts, the temple's many buildings were destroyed in the 15th century. Many of the extant structures date to the rebuilding campaign of the late 16th century. - Hotei Vol. 1; pg. 126
