"Ishiyama Temple is a turning point in Toshi's work. The similarities between it and his 1938 Shinjuku are obvious: the tactile but permeable atmosphere, reduced light, vertical lift, the lanterns, the final exquisite layer of human life. Ishiyama, however, probes a higher aesthetic level with its understated solemn grandeur of clearly defined objects, modern people doing important things, with a sophisticated treatment of light. Toshi's intent is objective, treating empirical reality artistically. Toshi's Grandmother Rui appears at the lower left of the print as an aged, bent woman with glasses. She was the spirit who nurtured and guided his life and is here memorialized." - Nature, Art, and Peace; pg. 48

Provenance: From a private collection. For the past 30 years the prints were properly stored away; never being framed or displayed. The majority of the collection showcases rarely seen MINT colors; several far exceeding numerous examples seen in prior collections.
