This great print of a Chinese woman smoking a water pipe was much criticized because Jacoulet chose a unique umber pigment for the gown that covered nearly half of the total image size. This daring device was later much admired, but at the time some observers felt that an elaborate textile would have guaranteed the success of the print. Jacoulet was no longer interested in such elaboration, however, and preferred the increasingly subtle experiments in large color masses that make this combination of russet and mustard so modern, and yet typical of his unqiue sensibility. - Miles pg. 118
