According to Narazaki, Hasui's style began to change around 1933. Feeling his work was becoming too conventional, he abandoned his style of the past few years that had been based on detailed sketches. This change is exhibited in this landscape series of eastern Japan in the freer handling of the subject, the abbreviation of form as well as an obvious simplification of the color scheme. A focus on the compositional plane is visible in the depiction of the rocks. Likewise, the movement of the breaking waves, created by the marks of the cutting tools, is indicative of the splendid mood of the work.
