Hasui, Kawase (1883 – 1957), “Dawn at the Nihon Bridge”

Notes: 'This work illustrates the Nihon bridge enveloped in a light morning mist. A good composition, a fine work with well-harmonized color scheme', notes Narazaki. The Nihonbashi was the starting point of the Tokaido; the bustling commercial area surrounding the bridge was likewise referred to as Nihonbashi. The early Nihon bridge would have looked very different from the western-style bridge of Hasui's day. - Hotei Vol.1 Provenance: The collection was initially purchased directly from S. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940's and has always been properly stored away in a single collection. The majority of the works showcase rarely seen MINT colors; several far exceeding numerous examples seen in prior collections.
