Notes: Miles notes that, "This study of a Korean holding a lantern as he struggles through a snowstorm proved one of Jacoulet's most popular pre-war prints. Despite its Korean subject matter, it treated a typical Japanese ukiyo-e scene in a comparatively Japanese manner, including the use of gofun (splashed white) for snow, and an unusually subtle gauffrage to indicate light from the lantern. As a result, it was much praised and bought even by Japanese collectors. Nuit de Neige is remarkable for the velvety qualities of the blacks and the extraordinarily subtle background."
