NOTES:
Notes: Signed in pencil by the artist. Kept in folder and never displayed. "From the Ryogoku Bridge (1939 7x9) Toshi shows more independence. From a point on the bridge, with the flat gray-blue sky above, the view looks up the Sumida River which is rendered in the same deep gray-blue. Along one bank are flat silhouettes for buildings, their windows illuminated in yellow and reflected in vertical patterns on the water. Toshi cut the blocks. Unlike his father's nocturnes, there is no misty atmosphere. The color areas are basically flat and direct. If Hiroshi usually presented the object in a moody atmosphere, here Toshi shows his preference for clear-cut objectivity even in midnight blue. It is a quiet scene, hinting at human presence with only a shadow, and appealing to the viewer more as a visual pattern than an emotional experience." - Nature, Art, and Peace; pg. 44
