Notes: A full moonlit evening surrounds a jungle crow resting on a flowering cherry branch. The carrion crow is native to Japan, and according to folklore is a messenger of the gods. At Shinto shrines throughout Japan, ceremonies are held in which crows are given offerings of rice cakes. Carrion crows were one of Koson's favorite subjects with over thirty known designs. The original painting of this image is known to reside in a private collection.
