Signed in graphite by the artist. "CWB" monogram and title in plate. While living in Hawai'i, Bartlett would often paint and sell his etchings to travelers at shipping ports, with an option of monochrome or colored versions. As stated by Miles, "The rare and rarely seen hand-colored etchings can now take their deserved place as Bartlett's collective masterwork".
The Taj Mahal from the East etching is particularly admired for its refined use of tone, moody composition, and the deliberate, delicate layering of watercolor that gives each print a unique, luminous quality. Other historical copies of his Taj Mahal compositions are preserved in major museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
