Part of his celebrated series, Ten Views of Mount Fuji, the artwork captures a breathtaking sunrise view from the ridge of the mountain, looking out over a vast sea of clouds. Yoshida’s incredible technical skill is on full display in this piece, utilizing 10 separate woodblocks and a painstaking 39 individual printing impressions to achieve the subtle, luminous color gradations of the morning sky and misty cloud cover. Rather than looking at Mount Fuji from afar, this perspective places the viewer directly on the rocky terrain of the peak, witnessing Goraiko—the arrival of light or the sunrise from the summit. The artist is famous for his obsession with capturing light. The pink, gold, and soft blue tones reflecting off the dense cloud layers perfectly mimic the fleeting moments of dawn.
