S. Watanabe "6 mm" circular seal; lower left. Hasui created several works depicting the hot-spring town of Shiobara, but this is the only winter composition, which is based on a sketch he made on January 14th, 1946.
This scene focuses on a narrow street, with the background mountains intimated by vague horizontal outlines. The town feels desolate, due to the recent storm that has blanketed the roofs of the houses with a thick layer of snow. Human presence is suggested by two illuminated windows, glowing in the evening blizzard.
