Hodakayama After Rain (Ugo no Hodakayama), by the master landscape artist Hiroshi Yoshida is widely considered one of the most successful and grand masterpieces of his prolific shin-hanga (new prints) career. This is one of a small handful of oversized works produced by the artist.Mount Hodaka is located in the Northern Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture. Yoshida loved this mountain so deeply that he repeatedly featured it in his art and even named his eldest son, Hodaka Yoshida, after it. The print captures a dramatic alpine scene emerging from clearing storm clouds at the end of the day. The artist uses deep purples and blues to shade the majestic, sharp rock faces. He utilizes the bokashi technique (color gradation) to create a lifelike, luminous glow where late afternoon sunlight breaks through the misty, rain-washed air. Yoshida's 1927 recreation of Mount Hodaka is now regarded as a 20th century masterpiece.
