Pre-earthquake prints by Takahashi Shōtei are exceptionally rare because the vast majority of his original woodblocks and unsold inventory were entirely destroyed. This cataclysm occurred during the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, which ignited fires that swept through Tokyo and devastated the workshop of his primary publisher, Watanabe Shōzaburō.
