Notes:

A well-known and renowned shin-hanga woodblock print design. Signed, 'Hasui' and sealed, 'Kawase', published by Watanabe Shozaburo.

This particular design was created during the artist's 102-day touring trip of Japan and based on a sketch he made in Etchu (modern-day Toyama Prefecture). Although a fairly complicated and meticulous bird's-eye view of the valley, it is also a nocturne - every detail is unified by the monochromatic scheme.

The original sketch was first conceived in 1923, though publication was delayed until 1928–1929, largely due to the meticulous production process and block carving involved. A full sequence of the six trial versions including the preparatory watercolor are illustrated in the Edo-Tokyo Museum catalog.
