Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. For centuries, Miyajima Island has been a sacred place of worship and pilgrimage for the people of Japan. The island’s name, which translates to “Shrine Island,” is a testament to its importance as a spiritual center. The earliest records of Miyajima Island date back to the 6th century, when it was considered a holy site of the Shinto religion. Over time, the island became home to a number of important shrines and temples, including the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th century and has since become one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Japan.
