Notes:
The master of snowscape imagery, Hasui had the natural ability to successfully create diverse snow scenes in novel ways. This design effortlessly portrays his talents with the delicate nuances that only he could achieve during the shin hanga era.
The composition masterfully captures a tranquil yet dramatic winter night in Tsukishima, a district in Tokyo. It features the silhouetted figure of a person holding a striking blue and yellow umbrella, battling through a heavy snowstorm. Published by Watanabe Shozaburo, the horizontal ōban format print was famously executed without an outline keyblock, utilizing 20 woodblocks and 25 individual impressions to achieve its soft, deeply atmospheric snowfall effects.
