He advanced the field for other researchers as editor of the diaries of Queen Lili'uokalani, author of the Hawaiian National Bibliography, and curator of Encounters with Paradise: Views of Hawaii and its People, 1778-1941, a sweeping show at the Honolulu Museum of Art in 1992.
